2011 Summer Champs, CAMO (Back Row: Pep, Anthony, Matt, Curlee, Front Row: Zach, picture hijacker Kameryn, Tyler, and Jared (Not Pictured: Brandon)Before the 2011 Summer Season drew to a close, there was one final night remaining: Championship Night. 7pm would see a semi-final matchup pitting Orange and Black against one another, while 8pm would see the victor take on the surprise #1 seed CAMO for bragging rights and the ability to call themselves "World Champions of the Universe".

SEMIFINAL: BLACK 54, ORANGE 40

In the opener, Orange, playing without top scorer Zak Bernard, did not realize that they were supposed to just hop on the tracks and get steamrolled by the 'Brey-Train'. Led by guard Jesus (and his oddly large fanclub on the night that resembled a middle school youth group) and grizzled veteran Dave Dyer, Orange stormed out to a first half lead, and actually went to the break ahead 29-24.

Unfortunately for them, that's where the good news ended on the night. Although 'minutes without a field goal' is not an official stat kept historically, Orange made a run at this unofficial record, going over 15 minutes in the 2nd half without one (if Zak was eligible for this he surely could've converted a field goal from no less than 30 yards out.) The absolute and total breakdown offensively left the door wide open for BLACK to barrel right through, and that they did.

The overall talent of BLACK was too much as they outscored ORANGE 30-11 in the second stanza to take the game 54-40.

Statistically BLACK's Jeff Martin led all scorers with 17 points (and added 9 rebs and 2 steals), while BMac also had an impressive 13pts, 5reb, 6 assists, and 5 steals. T-Reg also had 9 rebs, while Tremayne Pearson added 3 blocks on the defensive end.

For ORANGE, their season came to a close with an impressive double double from Stuart 'Straight Outta' Compton who ripped down 12 boards and added 10 points. Dean Blowers kept the Orange technical streak alive (they finish the season with 7 in as many games).

CHAMPIONSHIP: CAMO 64, BLACK 62

As for the nightcap, the team with the consensus top two players in the league (the aforementioned 'Brey-Train') would go up against the hottest team in the league, CAMO. BLACK was looking to cap off their 2nd three game win streak of the season, while CAMO was looking to increase their winning clip to five. The teams split their regular season meetings: BLACK whipped CAMOs behinds in game one, while CAMO was able to return the favor and overtake the number one seed with their victory in the rematch.

As for the contest, the capacity crowd definitely got their money's worth as both teams came out fired up. Black's bench, led by the Dongfather, William Dong, and Jeff McLean kept the volume level high all contest. Trey Pearson came out motivated after being absolutely and totally shut down in a way he's never experienced before by Camo's Double Zero in their previous contest . Pearson was a force in this game however with his pick and roll action, and although the scorer's table did not credit him with any blocks, observers witnessed approximately 47 times where his hand met the basketball in a downward fashion just after it was sent upwards by a CAMO team member.

The back and forth first half contest nearly took a huge turn when CAMO's leading scorer, Anthony 'Pappi' Voisinet, went up for a 3 and ended up rolling his ankle while coming down on top of a 'boxing out' Jeff Martin. After being down for quite some time Voisinet went to the bench and no one was sure if he would be able to return (see awesome pic of Anthony's post game ankle below).

Fortunately for CAMO, he was aTaking 3's can be hazardous to your health said CAMOs Anthony Voisinetble to shake off the injury and make his way back to the court. BLACK held a 32-26 lead as the first half clock wound down. CAMO attempted a late jumper that rimmed out long, but Curlee Brown was able to make a 12 footer with approximately .00000001 seconds left on the game clock for te half. After referee consultation and instant replay confirmation, there was bucket tabulation (much to BLACKs consternation) and the deficit was cut to 4, 32-28 at the break. This bucket would prove enormous as the contest went on.

Entering the 2nd half, BLACK started to edge ahead, and in a key span they created three consecutive turnovers, and opened up an 11 point lead with under 8 minutes left. However, after a timeout, Camo was able to force four consecutive turnovers of their own to muscle back into the contest. Camo fought all the way back and tied the game 62-62 with under a miniute left to play. Camo was able to make a free throw to take their first lead of the 2nd half, 63-62. The 2nd free throw was missed, but Camo got the rebound and was fouled again with :12 seconds remaining. Again they made one free throw and missed one, making the score 64-62.

BLACK had one last possession to tie or win. Brian McElfresh put up a 3 point attempt that fell just short with 2.6 seconds left, but the ball was rebounded by Jeff Martin who put up the games final shot from 5 feet and...... and...... the ball rattles out! CAMO WINS! CAMO WINS! The crowd stormed the court, BLACK players fell to the ground weeping, sobbing, tearing their jerseys off and beating their chests in agony and grief... oh the humanity, and CAMO players are carried off the court on the shoulders of their adoring fans (...it didnt EXACTLY happen like this except in our minds, but its fun to think it did)...

Statistically the games CO-MVPs were Anthony Voisinet with a season high 28 points (four 3pts), and Big Curlee Brown who had another double double with 15pts and 11 rebs, alongside 5 assists. Los Hot Alcarlos Pep Richard ripped down an enormous 14 rebounds and had 3 steals. Jared Watford added four big steals, and Tyler Spaulding led the contest with 6 assists.

For BLACK, a balanced scoring attack saw four players reach double digits, most notably a surprising performance by Silky Smooooooooth who had 15 big points. Jeff Martin led his team with 18 points, while Trey Pearson had 16. Suprisingly Tyler Register was held scoreless in this contest.

AFTERMATH

BLACK's William Dong would not allow his team's gutwrenching, heartbreaking loss to be the end of his evening. He would not rest until he attempted to gain some measure of respect and revenge for his defeated and sobbing comrades, so with a gleam in his eye and a purpose in his heart he followed many members of CAMO to the local 'Bowlatorium' where they were celebrating their championship victory and he challenged anyone and everyone to a 10 pin battle to the death (or until all were too tired to continue).

The members of CAMO agreed to this challenge and the contest was set: Starting lineup for CAMO was: 'Straight Man' Curlee, 'One Finger' Matt, '8 Pound' Zach, 'Hop-a-long' Tyler and '<insert nickname here>' Jared. Unfortunately Jared went awol and his last second replacement was tablemaiden Toni, aka 'Rocket Shot'. Lineup for BLACK was: 'The Dongfazzah' William Dong.

After a long and heated battle that spanned into the (almost) wee hours, Dong DID exact the measure of revenge he so longed for, going undefeated, 4-0, in all contests... Fortunately for CAMO his goal was not to win, but merely to not come in last each game, and in that, he was successful. Other notable scores were an 87 by Curlee, followed up by a.... nah lets just focus on the fact that Curlee dropped an 87 on the night YAZOW that's bad.... next time he might need bumpers.

Despite sacrificing their last place bowler each game to a bludegeoning by the Dongfather, CAMO was more than happy to trade this almost-moral victory for the title they had already gained earlier in the evening: that of 'World Champions of the Universe'.

~~~~~~
With the season now complete, I believe I speak for everyone on behalf of the league in stating that this was a surprisingly successful league that could and should be the building blocks for future leagues.
